Local community cause

This year, our donation to the local community has an environmental theme. Planning permission was sought to extend new housing onto two fields adjoining Rainton Meadows, a Durham Wildlife Trust reserve on the site of a former open cast mine. The area has seen an erosion of green belt with a number of new housing developments spring up. The local council denied the request - this time. In order to prevent further applications, the DWT opened an appeal to raise funds that would enable them to access a grant to purchase the land. We're already involved with the DWT through their volunteer program, so it was a natural step to donate 2% of the required amount. The target was achieved within the first week of the campaign and the application has been made to release the grant. We're hoping for a positive outcome in early Autumn. Additional donations received since have been allocated to the creation of wetland and meadow habitats in the fields, which we look forward to being further involved in.

Adsorption media for removing flavour taints

Two new grades of sheet filtration media have been developed for the selective removal of taints from wine and other beverages.

LIBRASORB® TX targets TCA (2,4,6-Trichloroanisole) and TBA (2,4,6-Tribromoanisole), typical causes of corkiness in wine.

LIBRASORB® MX has been developed to remove taints associated with Brettanomyces and other microbial species, described variously as horsey, barnyard and medicinal and leading to unpleasant astringent and metallic aftertastes.
